Samsung Demoed Foldable AMOLED Display Screen

Possibly the next innovative way of getting a large display screen with a smaller phone body size, Samsung SDI has presented their foldable AMOLED display prototype during the FPDI 2008. There are 2 pieces of thin AMOLED displays placed side by side, creating a almost perfect large WQVGA display screen. You can only see a very thin line at the joint of 2 AMOLED displays. T-Mobile charging £75 to upgrade mobile phones?

In a new scheme designed to stall upgrades and save money until the new financial year, T-Mobile ‘s contract customers will have to fork out £75.00 to upgrade their mobile phones. However if a customer doesn’t wish to hand over that cash, T-Mobile is offering a £5.00 per month discount in what they are calling a “Christmas loyalty bonus.”

T-Mobile says: “We believe that, in the current economic climate, most customers will welcome the opportunity to make savings on their monthly bills. All customers retain the choice to upgrade their handsets during Q4, but following a review of the eligibility criteria for mobile phone upgrades, some customers will be subject to reduced entitlements.”

The inability for customers to upgrade their handset isn’t going to go down too well I would imagine as most look forward to the upgrade to a better handset. However some may prefer this “Christmas loyalty bonus”. One thing though, funny how the T-Mobile G1 is exempt from the restrictions.

Sony Ericsson Adds New Panels for the Xperia X1

Sony Ericsson has just launched the latest panels for the Xperia X1, including the Facebook panel and Microsoft Windows Live panel. The new Facebook application built for Sony Ericsson uses the unique interface of the Xperia X1 to deliver an intuitive version of the site, putting images of your friends onto your phone’s desktop (standby screen) and showing their latest status updates as you touch their images. Touch through to access more Facebook features.

New functions available through the Xperia X1 Facebook panel include:

• An entirely new visual representation of friends’ statuses
• Simple and fast upload of photos to Facebook
• Easy access to Facebook friends list and phone numbers, with click to call capabilities.
• As you touch to view different information, icons and links change to give you one touch access to the information you are likely to use

The Windows Live panel uses existing Windows Live ID to sync contacts held in the X1’s phonebook, and the panel will provide easy access to an intuitive Microsoft messenger interface, including Hotmail and Live Messenger. The panel will also give users access to the Windows Live Search function, which is tailored to mobile phones and can be voice activated and controlled. Other Windows Live services will be incorporated into the panel throughout the year.

The Facebook, Windows Live and Dashwire panels are available for free download via the device’s on-board downloader and from the Sony Ericsson website, where they join the initial panels from Sony Ericsson and Spb software. Panels can also be downloaded from the Sony Ericsson Fun & Downloads web site. Browse to www.sonyericsson.com/fun and select ‘panels’.

In addition to panels developed through individual panel partners, Sony Ericsson is working with the independent developer community to encourage them to create exciting and innovative panels based on the recently released Beta software developers kit (SDK) for Windows Mobile 6.1 compatible with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 development environment and Microsoft Windows Vista operating system.

BlackBerry Storm on Telus now pre-order at Future Shop

Looks like the Canadians are about to get hold of Research In Motion’s big beautiful BlackBerry baby the BlackBerry Storm as Canadians can now step up to the internet and pre-order the first RIM touch-screen smartphone at Future Shop.

The BlackBerry Storm for Canada will be with Telus and Future Shop have it off contract for $649.99 and is limited to 1 handset per household with an estimated drop on the 8th of December.

As Future Shop have limited the pre-order of the Telus BlackBerry Strom, one can presume that the Storm is going to be in short supply in Canada for the time being, so maybe if you want it you should get that pre-order in quick.
