Nvidia says it will delay the launch of its Tegra 4 processor and accelerate the launch of the Tegra 4i, which integrates an LTE modem, reports RCR Wireless.
Nvidia’s Tegra 4 may be the world’s fastest mobile processor, but speed is not enough. Connectivity is now the name of the game. NVidia will delay the launch of the Tegra 4 in order to focus resources on the LTE version (4i) and get that to market faster.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Processors, like the Snapdragon 800 and 400 already integrate LTE modems. Qualcomm latest Gobi modem chipsets — the MDM9225 and MDM9625 — are capable of LTE Advanced and Carrier Aggregation with peak data rates of up to 150Mbps. Those LTE modem chips are used in many popular phones, such as Apple’s iconic iPhone. Qualcomm was responsible for 86 percent of the 47 million FDD-LTE cellphone modems shipped in 2012, according to market research firm Forward Concepts.
What will the new Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 have for processors? Some observers guess it will be Qualcomm. Probably with LTE, too.
