iMore reports that Apple is “currently targeting” an October launch for a 7 inch iPad priced in the $200-$250 range.
According to our source, which has proven reliable in the past, the reason for such aggressive pricing is to do to the tablet market what Apple did to the MP3 market in 2004 with the expansion of the iPod product line — leave absolutely no space for competitors.
The report’s source claims that the 7-inch iPad will be “identical in every way” to the current iPad with the exception of the display size, apparently including a Retina display. That would give the smaller iPad a pixel density roughly identical to that of the iPhone 4S which features 640×960 resolution (326 ppi). The Retina display on the new iPad features 2048-by-1536 resolution (264 ppi). Both have LED backlights, not OLED displays.
MacRumors says it remains unclear how Apple would be able to meet a $200-$250 price point. Apple’s current iPod touch starts at $199 and this smaller iPad will undoubtedly carry significantly higher component costs.
Apple sold 15.4 million iPad tablets in the last quarter of 2011, more than double the number it sold for the same period in 2010.
Gartner forecasts Android tablet sales increasing eight-fold over the next five years, but iSuppli says Apple will maintain a dominant market share. They predict total global media tablet shipments will reach 124 million units in 2012, up 90 percent from 65 million in 2011, with shipments projected to increase to 197 million in 2013, to 250 million in 2014, to 285 million in 2015 and to 311 million in 2016.
iPad and Android media tablet users have become and will remain avid app users over the next five years, says ABI Research, averaging more than 31 downloads per year per media tablet.

Google is reportedly developing an app that is similar to Apple’s Game Center, reports Business Insider. Google is reportedly preparing a native Android app that will feature functionality similar to Apple’s iOS-only Game Center which connects players across the vast sea of games available through the iOS App Store. In mid-February, Apple extended the multiplayer network to its forthcoming Mac OS X Mountain Lion, bringing iOS social gaming to the desktop.
Google may revamp its Google Play payment system to streamline purchases. Google apparently is looking to offer developers an in-house alternative to third-party services like OpenFeint, which itself is used by many iOS game makers.
Apple’s Game Center has a new GameKit application programming interface that allows developers to integrate their App Store titles into a social network. Apple hopes that developers will make their titles compatible with Game Center to provide a centralized location with an integrated friend system, leaderboards, and unlockable achievements, says Apple Insider.
Google’s software will include a social “achievement” system, which gives people awards and trophies for doing certain things in games. It will also include a leaderboard which will rank players against their friends, says Business Insider.

The torch for London’s 2012 Olympiad was lit in Greece today, heralding the start of the torch relay that will culminate with the opening ceremony on July 27. The first torchbearer was Greek swimmer and Olympic silver medalist, Spyros Gianniotis.
Among the many thousands of people that will get to relay the Olympic flame will be HTC boss Peter Chou, reports The Verge. The CEO and cofounder of Taipei’s most successful mobile company has been honored, in recognition for his contributions to the development of the global mobile industry.
Chou will run with the torch in London on July 6, three weeks before the Olympics opening ceremony in Stratford on July 27. He said, “every step I take will represent my deepest support for Taiwan’s athletes attending the London 2012 Olympic Games.”
HTC’s biggest competitor, of course, is South Korean-based Samsung, a major sponsor of the 2012 Olympics and has an Olympic Torch timeline.
The 2012 Summer Olympics begin in London on July 27, and once again NBC is getting ready to broadcast the games to America via television and the Web.
NBC is dispatching about 1,500 people to the U.K. who will be working in 65,000 square feet of space inside the International Broadcast Centre at the Olympic Park, plus various event and non-event venues in and around London.
All transmissions from the venues go through the broadcast compound before being transmitted to their final destination. At 275m long, 104m wide and 21m tall, the building is roughly the same size as two football fields end to end.

Microsoft is trying to lock out competing browsers when running Windows on ARM chips, reports C/Net. Today, Mozilla’s top lawyer warned that Microsoft’s behavior threatens a repeat of history, because it’s telling Mozilla that it’s barring Firefox from forthcoming Windows 8 machines that use ARM processors. By only allowing Internet Explorer to fully access advanced OS functions, “third-party browsers are effectively excluded from the platform,” he said.
Windows RT, the name Microsoft has given to Windows running on the ARM processors, will have two environments, a Windows Classic environment and a Metro environment for apps. However, Windows on ARM prohibits any browser except for Internet Explorer from running in the privileged “Windows Classic” environment.
Technically, Mozilla could release a version of Firefox for Windows 8′s new Metro interface, said Asa Dotzler, a Mozilla spokesman. But that browser would be crippled on Windows RT.
Google has joined Mozilla in its desire to permit full-fledged browsers other than Internet Explorer on Windows RT. Google makes the popular Chrome Browser. “We share the concerns Mozilla has raised regarding the Windows 8 environment restricting user choice and innovation,” replied Google to a query by C/Net. Microsoft declined to comment on Mozilla’s stance.
With Windows RT, Microsoft appears to be aiming for an operating system more in the style of iOS than Windows on the x86 chips. Microsoft wants to build tablets that compete with iPads. Windows RT can only be obtained preinstalled on hardware and it can only install software updates from the Windows Store. Third-party browsers are apparently not welcome.
