Back when the T-Mobile G1 launched for T-Mobile USA, there was a lot of speculation circling Google and their little green Android. Was it going to be a success? Would anyone even care? Considering that the G1 didn’t make that big of a splash on the consumer side of things, it was a pretty much unanimous (with some nay-sayers mixed in for good measure) vote that the G1, and the software powering it, was a game changer. At least, it would be. And now, since the launch of the Motorola Droid on the Verizon network, we’ve seen that change in perception, as the Android revolution continues to spread. The newest target? Canada.

Rogers, one of the largest wireless carriers in Canada, has just received their latest Android-powered handset. Not HTC built this time, the Samsung Galaxy Spica is a 3.2-inch, 320×480 capacitive touchscreen device, running (unfortunately) Android version 1.5. There has been word that the device will be upgraded to 2.1 eventually, so if you’re looking to pick up an Android phone, don’t let the 1.5 version hold you back too long. 2.1 is coming. If the rumors are true. It’s also got a 3.5mm audio jack, 3.2MP camera on the back, and a 2GB MicroSD card sold with the phone.

As is standard up in the Great North, a three-year deal will get you the device for $79.99. It jumps up to $349.99 on a two-year deal, and if you’re one of those people who hates contracts, it’ll be a cool $449.99. Not bad for the out-right price (if you don’t look at the software version), but we’re guessing that many Canadians out there are going to enjoy their three-year plan. Anyone up there going to go check out the Galaxy? Let us know!

You’d think with all the coverage using a mobile phone when driving has been given people would wise up to the fact that it is dangerous, not only to themselves but other road users. However, the results of a recent survey by CareerBuilder shows that more than half of workers check email and do other tasks whilst driving on business, reports information week.

In November of 09, CareerBuilder surveyed in excess of 5200 workers and 54 percent of all workers taking part admitted to using their smartphone while on the road.

The survey even goes further by crunching the numbers down to profession which resulted in 66 percent of sales workers use a smartphone when driving, 59 percent of professional and business service workers do the same, and a big shock is that 50 percent of healthcare workers take the risk.

However, mobile workers don’t just check their mobile phone while driving as figures also show the 62 percent check during a meal, 60 percent when on holiday, 57 percent when using the bathroom, 50 percent when in bed, 25 percent when at the movies, 18 percent when on a date, 17 percent while working out, 17 percent while attending a child’s even, and 11 percent even check their smartphone when in church.

But the big issue here is that overall that 54 percent who continue to use their smartphone when driving. It is time to change that and wise up to just how big a risk you are taking with peoples lives.

Verizon Wireless announced today that its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network field trials in the United States have demonstrated wireless data speeds that will reach a download speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and peak upload speeds of 20 to 25 Mbps. Verizon Wireless has been testing its forthcoming 4G LTE network in both Boston and Seattle since August, 2009. Successful data calls involved streaming video, file uploads and downloads, and Web browsing, as well as calls with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to enable voice transmissions over the LTE network. Verizon Wireless engineers report LTE average data rates of 5-12 Mbps on the downlink and 2-5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world environments.

“Our LTE rollout plan positions Verizon Wireless to be a global leader in 4G LTE deployment. We are on track to deliver an outstanding wireless data experience to customers in 25 to 30 markets covering roughly 100 million people by year’s end,” said Tony Melone, senior vice president and chief technical officer at Verizon Wireless. “As device makers, manufacturers and others around the world begin to introduce newer and faster products to take advantage of these incredible new speeds, Verizon Wireless will be positioned to offer our customers new and exciting products on the nation’s first 4G LTE network.”

Verizon Wireless is currently installing LTE equipment at existing cell sites and switching centers around the United States as part of its extensive, ongoing investment in its voice and data network infrastructure.

Verizon Wireless has been doing bandwidth test for their 4G LTE network and said results of those tests just might make iPhone users a bit envious, that is unless Verizon and Apple can actually get round the table and formulate some deal to deliver the iPhone to the Big Red, otherwise iPhone users will be playing the 4G waiting game.

According to an article over on internet news, Verizon Wireless is steaming ahead in the 4G LTE network game, the successor to the present 3G networks that will deliver faster data transfer.

Data rates is where the big difference comes with 4G as 3G puts out roughly 2 megabits a second while 4G begins at 100 mbps and can hit 1 gigabit per second, at least that is the theory as 4G uses Forward Error Correction which reduces bit error rate, supports larger data packages and thus increases throughput.

Verizon is forging ahead with their 4G LTE network and rival AT&T is expected to follow the 4G move next year, which means it will be at least a year before iPhone users can take advantage of 4G speeds unless the iPhone 4G goes with Verizon Wireless.

There’s a big difference in the launch of the HD2 on T-Mobile than most other launches of devices. The carrier wants those looking for phones, and a media device, to know that there’s no better way to do that than the 4.3-inch screen of the HD2. It’s still rocking Windows Mobile 6.5 (and some say that’s not a bad thing), but it’s covered up incredibly well by HTC’s Sense UI. On the media-end of things, we’ve got Blockbuster On Demand services, MobiTV for television on the go, as well as two movies pre-loaded on the device: Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

So, if you’re in the market for a new phone, and you’re fine waiting at least a couple more weeks, then it would probably do you some good to look over at the magenta-themed carrier. Did you hear that they just won a pretty lofty award? So, before we take up any more of your time, keep staring at the images. The phone really is that good.

What’s this? A new iPhone in the making? A Chinese blend iPhone 4G perhaps? No nothing as quite as exciting as that. It looks like Apple isn’t about to give up on getting their iconic iPhone into China as Apple is lloking to work with China Unicom to re-enter the Chinese market.

According to an article over on itproportal, Apple is looking to offer a “redesigned version” of the iPhone that will sport Chinese standard WiFi capabilities because the Chinese government said Apple wasn’t allowed to offer WiFi but wanted them to use the Chinese WiFi standard WAPI.

So it looks like Apple has decided to bow down to the Chinese chiefs and offer a new redesigned iPhone which will pack not just Chinese WAPI but WiFi as well.

Apple tried to take the Chinese mobile market by storm with the iPhone back in October but failed due to the iPhone apparently offering less to the customer than what was on offer from pirated versions of the iPhone.
